Soft Robots!
How do you think robots of the future will look like? It seems that they are becoming soft by the passing of time, literally! For example, this robot fish made by M.I.T that swims along side marine life.
How do they work?
Their main characteristics if these bots is that they are soft, made out of rubber, polymers and even fabric other than the traditional plastic, steel and aluminum. The moving parts like the "actuators" that usually use electric motors are replaced with hydraulics or pneumatics which pump compressed fluid through them making them move in a predictable manner.
Others use shape memory alloys that coils and crawls when heat is applied to them, like this octopus robot from "Bio Robotics".
Some have plans to even replace the actuators with actual " living muscles ".
One of the reasons these new breed of robots are promising is because of their ability to adapt, which gives them a wide range of applications. They also help in the monitoring of our planet's ecosystem.
So maybe in the future, we may have squishy robots instead of the rock hard ones we know of today!
